Mark Bouzyk, PhD, has spent over three decades leading breakthroughs in biotechnology, genetics, and precision medicine. From world-class research institutions to successful biotech startups, one principle has guided his work: science should serve people.
Mark began his career in the United Kingdom at a national biomedical research institute and a leading cancer research foundation, contributing to pioneering genetic research. These early experiences shaped his vision of using genetics as a bridge between the lab and real-world healthcare. His journey continued at a global pharmaceutical company, where he oversaw international teams and helped develop pharmacogenomics programs that changed the way medicine is prescribed.
In 2005, Mark joined a major U.S. research university to establish and direct a Center for Medical Genomics. He expanded research infrastructure and helped a leading cancer institute achieve its first-ever national cancer center designation — a milestone for the region. Known for mentorship as much as innovation, he created training programs and workshops that prepared the next generation of scientists to advance the field.
Mark co-founded an Inc. 500 genomics and biomarker company that became one of the fastest-growing firms in its field for three consecutive years. Under his leadership, the company secured multimillion-dollar contracts, including the landmark national veterans’ Million Veteran Program, one of the largest genomic and epigenomic studies ever conducted. Following the company’s successful acquisition by a global precision medicine and AI-driven healthcare firm, he continued shaping the future of precision medicine through a leading healthcare AI startup, developing AI-powered tools that improve patient care while easing the burden on physicians.
Mark’s impact extends far beyond labs and boardrooms. He helped establish the first major genetics laboratory in West Africa, provided support to launch a national genetic screening initiative in the U.S., and developed genetic tests to benefit the Ashkenazi Jewish community. He also supports over 20 animal welfare organizations reflecting his belief that compassion and science go hand in hand.
For Mark, every scientific innovation is an opportunity to increase access, reduce disparities, and improve lives. From advancing AI-driven healthcare solutions to building genomics infrastructure in underserved regions, his work blends discovery with humanity — ensuring that science matters not just in theory, but in practice.

Mark played a central role in a landmark national veterans’ Million Veteran Program— one of the largest genomic research efforts in history. At the same time, he helped secure multimillion-dollar contracts at an Inc. 500 genomics and biomarker company and establish a foundation for understanding how genetics shapes veterans’ health. As of late 2023, the program has enrolled over one million veterans, creating a diverse cohort and generating data that supports more than 350 peer-reviewed studies in areas such as PTSD, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Mark’s work continues to drive advances in precision medicine and the future of veteran healthcare nationwide.

In the early days of a nationwide genetic testing initiative dedicated to making screening accessible to families, Mark offered his expertise. His consultation helped shape the program’s scientific and technical foundation and paved the way for its nationwide success. Today, the initiative empowers thousands of people to make informed healthcare decisions, particularly in the Jewish community, and Mark’s early involvement reflects his commitment to supporting programs that democratize genetic testing and improve lives.

Mark has dedicated part of his scientific expertise to developing genetic tests for populations disproportionately affected by certain health conditions. For example, he designed, developed, and validated tests for lysosomal storage disorders many of which are more prevalent in groups such as the Ashkenazi Jewish population. By tailoring precision medicine tools to meet the needs of specific populations, Mark ensured that vulnerable groups are not overlooked in the advancement of genomics. His work represents a rare blend of rigorous science and social responsibility, aimed at reducing suffering and providing families with life-changing genetic insights.

Mark’s compassion extends beyond human health into the animal world. Over the years, he has supported more than 20 animal charities, with a special focus on the welfare and protection of dogs — not even neglecting other animals such as donkeys. From funding rescue efforts to backing organizations that provide shelter, care, and adoption opportunities, his contributions have given countless animals a second chance at life. For Mark, helping dogs and other vulnerable creatures is a reflection of his broader philosophy: science and success should always be paired with empathy and kindness.
